New York’s Beer Scene

Published: July 19th, 2019

The beer scene in New York City has really taken a turn over the last 10 years. With new craft breweries opening up throughout the outer-boroughs there are plenty of options for new and exciting beers to taste! Whether you are a fan of a dark and creamy stout or prefer a light and crisp pale ale, we have the place (and the beer) for you!

SingleCut Beersmiths
19-33 37th Street
Queens, New York

SingleCut Brewery was founded in 2012 and was the first production brewery in Queens since prohibition! Ironically, their address, 19-33, is the year prohibition ended! The brewery welcomes families and has an array of vinyl records, board games and even yard games. We recommend trying the 18 Watt IPA, it has a hoppy tropical taste to it and is the perfect drink for a hot summer day!  While the brewery is a little off the beaten path for those coming from Manhattan,  it is well worth the cab ride for beer lovers.

Coney Island Brewery
1904 Surf Avenue
Brooklyn, New York

Our next stop is the Coney Island Brewery, which is located about a block from the Coney Island Boardwalk and the Luna Park Amusement Center. It is the perfect location for the family to spend the day at the amusement park and then venture over to the brewery for a much needed beverage!  We recommend the Mermaid Pilsner, it has a light and floral taste to it! Coney Island located in Brooklyn and is about a 40 minute train ride from midtown Manhattan!

Flagship Brewery
40 Minthorne Street
Staten Island, New York

Staten Island is normally not frequented by NYC visitors, but the Staten Island waterfront is growing daily and giving out-of-towner’s more and more reasons to hop on the ferry and explore the borough. Plan an afternoon of shopping at the Empire Outlets or catch a minor league baseball game and then head over to Staten Islands Flagship Brewery! We recommend trying the Dark Mild, an almost black ale with hints of caramel.  The brewery is a 5 minute cab ride from the Staten Island Ferry, which runs every 1/2 hour back to Manhattan.

Fifth Hammer Brewery
10-28 46th Avenue
Long Island City, New York

Located just a few blocks from the Long Island City waterfront there are 6 breweries that are all within walking distance of each other. One of our favorites is Fifth Hammer. Fifth Hammer Brewery is known for their creative flavors. We recommend trying the Palette Pigment: Strawberry Rhubarb Sour Beer. Trips to the brewery over the summer can also include a visit to the LIC Flea Market, that is less than a 5 minute walk from the brewery!
