Thanksgiving Day Weekend in NYC

Each November, New York City is buzzing with excitement in preparation for the very beginning of the holiday season. Over 3.5 million people travel to The Big Apple to enjoy the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. If you are looking for information on where to watch the parade, where to have your Thanksgiving dinner or want insight on the best holiday markets in the area, we want to send you in the right direction!  We’ve also included information on how to get the best rates for your 2016 visit during our Black Friday – Cyber Monday Sale!

Balloon Inflation & the Parade

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is one of the most popular parades in the country. With over 3.5 million people watching from the street and an estimated 50 million watching from home!  While watching numerous marching bands, floats and balloons find their way from Central Park West to 34th Street is quite entertaining, half the fun of the Macy’s Day Parade is seeing all of the balloons being blown up the night prior.  The Balloon Inflation is a New York City tradition you shouldn’t miss! On Wednesday, November 25th, 2015 from 3pm till 10pm travel up to The Museum of Natural History on Central Park West and watch some of your favorite childhood characters be brought to life and prepped for their big debut on the Manhattan streets.

On the day of the Parade, the festivities will begin at 9 am and last until about 12 Noon. If you are interested in standing along Central Park from 75th street to 59th street on Central Park West, viewers will start to arrive around 6:30 am to stake out the perfect location to watch the parade. You can also view the parade from 6th avenue and 59th street all the way down to 39th street. We recommend staying away from 6th avenue between 38th Street and 34th street. These blocks are filled with news outlets and are very packed. Be sure to dress warmly as November in New York can be fairly brisk. Also, snacks are permitted at the parade so if you’re traveling with little ones it would be wise to bring something for them to munch on!

  • The Monkey Bar is a New York staple that has been featured in many films and would be our Thanksgiving pick for the East Side. The Monkey Bar will not have a Thanksgiving specific Menu but they will have some inspired dishes for the evening.  They are located right off of the lobby at the Hotel Elysee as well!Monkey Bar
  • Tony’s Di Napoli in Times Square offers an amazing deal for dinner. They have not only a Pre Fixe Menu that includes all of the traditional fixings for Thanksgiving, but they also offer their regular menu as well (which works great if you have a vegetarian in your party). The Pre Fixe meal is $38.95 per person not including tax, gratuity or alcohol.   They are located directly off the lobby at the Casablanca Hotel.

Shopping

If there is one thing New York is famous for, it is shopping! Whether it be our large department stores to unique popup shops throughout Manhattan, we have it all! While many stores are not open for most of the day on Thanksgiving, they are beginning to open earlier and earlier for the infamous Black Friday shopping. If you are hoping to get some great deals make sure you hit up some of the many stores who participate in this fun and somewhat hectic sale. Throughout the Holiday season there are many different places that offer great boutique stores with unique gifts. The most popular ones in the city are the Winter Village @ Bryant Park, The Union Square Holiday Market, and the Columbus Circle Holiday Market.  The markets sell everything from handmade jewelry to cable knit scarves. They also offer a wide variety of delicious food and beverages.
