Jet Lag Survival 101 with the Library Hotel Collection

Published: November 3rd, 2014

There is an endless amount of things to do while in New York City and suffering from jet lag is certainly no way to spend part of your busy vacation!  Here at the Library Hotel Collection, we want to make sure you are well rested and ready to start your adventure from the moment you step off of the plane, so we’ve collected our favorite Jet Lag Tips.

Adjust to the new time zone before your trip

Though you may already have plenty of things on your vacation to-do list, try adding a new sleep regimen, as well!  You can begin adjusting to a new time zone before your vacation to ensure you can get plenty of rest with your new sleep pattern.   Try changing your bedtime by 30 minutes to an hour each night, starting several days before your flight.  If you’re travelling east, gradually go to sleep a bit earlier each night and if you’re headed west, try to stay up later than usual.

Stay hydrated

The symptoms of jet lag can heightened by dehydration, so be sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after your flight! The Library Hotel Collection has bottles of water in each guestroom as well as at the desk, make sure to take a bottle with you before you explore the city! Don’t forget to protect your skin and eyes from the drying cabin air of planes with lotions, lip balm, and eye drops, as well.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol during your travel and while your body is still getting used to the new time zone.  Not only can they dehydrate you, but drinking either within a few hours of when you plan to go to bed can also disrupt your sleep.

Be active, even while travelling

During long flights, periodically stretch and move around the cabin to loosen up your stiff muscles and improve circulation throughout your body.

Once you arrive at your hotel, take a walk to explore the area for a bit!  You’ll get to know your new neighborhood a bit and the exercise and fresh air will combat those sleepy feelings.  The natural sunlight can also help your body’s clock adjust to the new time zone. If you are travelling east, try to get the plenty of sunlight during the morning to shift your body’s clock ahead a bit.  When headed west, spend some extra time outdoors in the afternoon to delay it.

Resist the urge to nap

Although that cozy bed may be calling your name as you enter your hotel room, it’s usually best to stay awake once you arrive.  Try to wait and go to sleep until a normal bedtime in your destination’s time zone.
