Summer Streets in NYC

Traditions in NYC run deep. From the yearly marathons and parades to the yearly tree lighting ceremonies, we New Yorker’s love a reason to celebrate our city! If you have yet to experience a newer tradition, Summer Streets, then this may be your opportunity.

Summer Streets is an annual celebration of NYC’s most valuable public space—our streets! Hosted over the first 3 Saturdays of August (4th, 11th and 18th)! Summer Streets runs all the way from Central Park to the Brooklyn Bridge; and provides over 7 miles of open streets to enjoy as well as rest stops to take advantage of along the way!
It is open for all age groups to walk, run or bike! With a path starting on 72nd street, you can walk right down the middle of one of the cities most iconic avenues, Park Avenue! All rest stops include activities that are free of charge and designed for all ages and levels of ability!  Let us highlight some of our favorites below for you, but for the full details visit this link for more information on the Summer Streets Activities!

The Uptown Rest Stop

More appropriately named, “Children’s Corner”, this rest stop is the one stop shop for workshops geared towards children ages 2 and up! Located on Park Avenue between 51st & 52nd street  you will find different activities including Color Theory Exercises, Learning about Lungs and even a kids friendly Manhattan History Quiz! You can find more than just the interactive workshops as they will also be hosting performances all day and fitness activities for all to enjoy (including an obstacle course!)

The Midtown Rest Stop

Located on Park Avenue South between 24th and 25th street is the “City Picnic” Rest Stop! Here you will find free food & beverage samples from different vendors including SkinnyPop & Lifeway! While enjoying a snack, you can catch musical shows on the midtown performance stage starting at 8:30am until 1pm! Both the Midtown and Uptown stations offer free bike rentals throughout the day, please note this is limited to 50 users at one time.  This is conveniently located just one block from Hotel Giraffe!

The Astor Place Rest Stop

Located just south of Union Square is the “Outdoor Adventure” Rest Stop! The “Kids Park” will be offering a custom pump track, which is used for learning and practicing mountain biking. They also have a soccer skills zone developed in partnership with the New York Redbulls!

The SOHO Rest Stop

Come and get your heart rate up at the “Fitness Zone” located on Spring & Kenmare Streets! Starting at 8:30am until 1pm you will find all sorts of classes to get you moving! From a morning Yoga and meditation to a Cardio Kick class these free fitness events will inspire you to move! This is also the stop to bring any furry friends who may be accompanying you for your weekend walk! From K9 injury prevention to a Dog Park/Agility Course your pup can also work up a sweat!

The Foley Street Rest Stop

The last stop on the route and the furthest south is the “Extreme Sports” Zone! Located on Lafayette and Centre Streets this areas largest attraction is the zip-line that offers a bird’s eye view of NYC! This first come, first serve event will definitely fill up quick, so make sure to head over earlier in the day if you are interested in soaring above a NYC street! You can also learn to juggle & hula hoop.
